Springfield Primary School Celebrates Glowing Ofsted Inspection

Springfield Primary School in Chelmsford has received an impressive set of results from its latest Ofsted inspection, with inspectors awarding the school Strong Standard ratings across several key areas following a visit on 10th March 2026.

The report, published on 28th April 2026, assessed the school under Ofsted's updated framework — which replaced the previous single overall effectiveness grade with a more detailed, category-by-category approach. Springfield excelled across three of those categories, earning the coveted Strong Standard rating for Inclusion, Leadership and Governance, and Personal Development and Wellbeing.

A School Where Everyone Belongs

Inspectors praised the school's highly effective processes for identifying and responding to additional needs, noting that leaders work closely with parents, external agencies and local authorities to put the right support in place swiftly.

The report highlighted that staff adapt the curriculum well for pupils who need it, and that pupils learning English as an additional language receive effective help closely matched to their needs. With over a quarter of pupils receiving SEN support — well above the national average — Springfield's inclusive approach is clearly central to its identity.

Exemplary Leadership Singled Out

Inspectors reserved particular praise for the school's leadership team, headed by headteacher Mrs Jacquelyn Pick. Staff were found to have a very high regard for leaders, viewing them as models of professional excellence, and feeling part of a highly valued team where their workload and wellbeing are meaningfully considered.

Governors were also commended for carrying out their statutory duties effectively, providing the right support and appropriate challenge to leaders, and using their close knowledge of the school to ask pertinent questions.

Happy, Safe and Well-Prepared Pupils

The inspection painted a warm picture of day-to-day life at the Forsythia Close school. Pupils are happy and feel safe at this friendly school, and whether they join at the start of Reception or later in their school life, they quickly feel like they belong to the "Springfield family."

Micky, the school dog, was noted as a valuable addition to the team, bringing comfort and a friendly wag of the tail to anyone who needs it.

Pupils are described as proud to be kind, tolerant and active members of the school community, with older pupils maturely acting as role models for younger children — leading games at break times or serving drinks in the dining hall.

Curriculum, Achievement and Early Years

The school received Expected Standard ratings — the benchmark for a well-functioning school — in Achievement, Attendance and Behaviour, Curriculum and Teaching, and Early Years.

In the Early Years, children settle quickly into calm, consistent routines, with staff skilfully helping children to learn and use ambitious new vocabulary through high-quality conversations and thoughtfully designed activities.

Leaders have acted promptly to address writing standards, which have historically been a weaker area, and standards in writing are now rising.

Safeguarding Standards Met

Inspectors confirmed that safeguarding standards are met, with leaders and governors having established an open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified, acted upon and managed.

Looking Ahead

The report did identify two areas for continued focus: improving attendance rates — particularly for disadvantaged pupils — and ensuring pupils have more consistent opportunities to practise writing skills across all subjects. These are areas the school is already actively working on.

Springfield Primary School serves 406 pupils aged 4 to 11 and is part of the GLF Schools trust. The full inspection report is available on the Ofsted website.
