Essex Police have confirmed they have an appropriate policing operation in place ahead of a protest scheduled in Chelmsford this weekend.

The demonstration is set to take place on Saturday 28 March 2026 and is understood to be in opposition to the transportation of asylum seekers by bus between the Wethersfield asylum reception centre and Chelmsford.

Organisers are protesting against the movement of residents from the former RAF base at Wethersfield, which has been used to house asylum seekers, with regular transport links to the city.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “We’re aware of a planned event in Chelmsford on 28 March. We have been in consistent contact with organisers and all partners, and we have an appropriate policing plan in place.”

The force has not disclosed the expected number of officers or specific tactics, but emphasised that public safety and the right to peaceful protest will be balanced.

This latest demonstration comes amid ongoing local tensions surrounding asylum accommodation in Essex. Wethersfield has seen multiple protests in recent months, and the issue has previously led to significant policing operations in nearby areas, including Epping.

In a separate but related development, two men are currently on trial at Chelmsford Crown Court accused of violent disorder during an anti-asylum hotel protest in Epping in July 2025. The court has heard claims of an “aggressive mob” throwing missiles, damaging police vehicles and attacking officers.

Police are urging anyone planning to attend Saturday’s event in Chelmsford to protest peacefully and lawfully, and have reminded the public that they will deal firmly with any criminal behaviour or disorder.

Members of the public are advised to avoid the area if possible, allow extra time for journeys, and check local traffic updates on the day.

This remains a developing situation. Essex Live and other local outlets will provide updates as the event unfolds on Saturday 28 March 2026.
