Six-goal Essex derby thriller ends all square as Urchins fightback denied by late leveller

An extraordinary Essex derby at the Hornchurch Stadium served up six goals, a remarkable home comeback and a dramatic late equaliser, as AFC Hornchurch and Chelmsford City fought out a breathless 3-3 draw on Tuesday evening in the National League South.

The Clarets made a flying start in Upminster, racing into a two-goal lead inside the opening 16 minutes through Harry Barbrook and Kane Crichlow's well-taken finishes. It looked as though interim manager Ricky Holmes' side were firmly in the driving seat — but Daryl McMahon's Hornchurch had other ideas.

First Half: Chelmsford Fly Out of the Blocks

Harry Barbrook broke the deadlock for the visitors in just the fifth minute, capitalising on early City pressure to give the Clarets an encouraging lead. The momentum was firmly with the away side, and Kane Crichlow doubled Chelmsford's advantage to make it 2-0 within 16 minutes — a blistering opening spell that left the Urchins rattled.

Hornchurch, however, rallied. McMahon's side responded before the break, with Dominic Poleon converting from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute to hand the hosts a lifeline heading into the interval, with the score 2-1 at the break.

Second Half: Hornchurch Stage Stunning Turnaround

The Urchins emerged from the dressing room a transformed side. They turned the game on its head early in the second half, as Josh Rees and Angelo Balanta both struck from close range to give the Urchins the lead. Within the space of a remarkable passage of play, Hornchurch had turned a deficit into a 3-2 advantage, stunning the travelling Clarets support.

But Chelmsford City refused to buckle. They found a route back into the contest in the 77th minute through an own goal, but neither side could find a decisive late winner to aid their respective promotion hopes. The final whistle sparked mixed emotions — relief and frustration in equal measure for both camps.

The Bigger Picture

The result leaves Chelmsford City 11th in the National League South with two games remaining, four points adrift of the play-off places, ahead of Saturday's trip to fellow promotion hopefuls Chesham United in the penultimate match of the season.

Hornchurch, meanwhile, sit 2nd in the National League South table on 66 points, still very much in the promotion picture — though dropping two points in a game of this nature will sting.

For Chelmsford, the afternoon was tinged with frustration. Interim manager Ricky Holmes was forced into one change from the side that had started the previous two matches, with Antony Papadopoulos replacing the suspended Archie Tamplin in midfield.
