Hundreds of brave competitors are set to take on one of Essex’s most iconic and unusual sporting events this weekend as the world-famous Maldon Mud Race returns on Sunday.

Taking place at Promenade Park in Maldon, the annual event will once again see participants race across the thick mud of the River Blackwater at low tide — a challenge that is as entertaining for spectators as it is gruelling for those taking part.

A race like no other

The Maldon Mud Race is no ordinary run. Competitors must complete a roughly 400-metre course across the exposed riverbed, battling deep, sticky mud, uneven terrain and water crossings before returning to the finish line.

The race is entirely dependent on the tides, meaning the exact start time can vary each year, but for 2026 it is expected to take place in the early afternoon, with the event running throughout the day.

Participants often wear fancy dress, adding to the spectacle, while footwear is typically taped on to avoid being swallowed by the mud — a common hazard of the race.

A huge day for Maldon

The event isn’t just about the race itself. Thousands of visitors are expected to descend on Maldon for a full day of entertainment, including food stalls, bars, live music and family-friendly attractions.

Spectator entry is free, making it one of the most popular spring events in the Essex calendar, with large crowds lining the riverbanks to watch competitors struggle through the infamous Blackwater mud.

Charity at its heart

Despite its light-hearted and often hilarious appearance, the Maldon Mud Race has a serious purpose.

The event raises significant funds for local charities, with competitors required to secure sponsorship as part of their entry. In previous years, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for good causes across Essex.

Around 300 participants typically take part, all contributing to the fundraising effort while tackling one of the UK’s most unique endurance challenges.

A proud local tradition

Dating back to the 1970s, the Maldon Mud Race began as a light-hearted pub challenge before evolving into an internationally recognised event.

Today, it attracts competitors and spectators from across the UK and beyond, all eager to experience — or witness — the chaos of racing through deep estuary mud.
