A12 overnight closures between Boreham and Marks Tey continue this week

Drivers travelling from Chelmsford are being warned to allow extra time for their journeys as overnight closures continue on the A12 between Boreham and Marks Tey this week.

The northbound A12 between Junction 19 at Boreham and Junction 25 at Marks Tey is scheduled to close overnight while work takes place on the carriageway.

Closures are scheduled between 9pm and 5am on weeknights through to Friday, meaning motorists travelling north from Chelmsford during the affected hours will need to follow diversion routes.

Where is the A12 closed?

The affected section runs from:

Junction 19 – Boreham

to

Junction 25 – Marks Tey

The closure therefore affects a substantial stretch of the northbound A12 beyond Chelmsford towards Witham, Kelvedon and Colchester.

Drivers joining the A12 from Chelmsford and travelling north should check their route before setting off, particularly for journeys taking place after 9pm.

What time does the A12 close?

The planned closures take place overnight between:

9pm and 5am

The work is scheduled on weeknights through to Friday.

The road should reopen to traffic during the daytime, although motorists should always check the latest travel information before beginning their journey in case the programme changes.

Why is the A12 closing?

The overnight closures are required to allow carriageway reconstruction work to take place.

Carrying out the work overnight is intended to reduce disruption during the busiest daytime periods, but drivers travelling late in the evening or during the early hours could face longer journeys.

Drivers should expect diversions

A signed diversion route should be in operation while the northbound carriageway is closed.

Because the closure extends from Boreham to Marks Tey, motorists travelling from Chelmsford towards Witham, Kelvedon, Colchester and destinations further north should allow additional travelling time.

Drivers who regularly use the A12 for night shifts, airport journeys or other early-morning travel may want to check conditions before leaving home.

Check before travelling

Roadworks programmes can sometimes change at short notice because of weather, operational requirements or progress made during previous shifts.

Motorists are therefore advised to check the latest road and traffic information before travelling rather than relying solely on previously published closure schedules.

Chelmsford City Hub will continue to highlight significant road closures and travel disruption affecting motorists in and around the city.
