Chelmsford City Racecourse Officially Cleared to Reopen as Horse Racing Returns on 2 November

Horse racing will return to Chelmsford City Racecourse on Monday 2 November 2026 after the venue's new operator received formal approval from the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), ending months of uncertainty over the future of racing at the Essex track.

Arena Racing Company (ARC) confirmed on Friday 23 October that it had been granted a licence to stage racing at the venue, following an inspection and successful test gallops earlier in the week.

The announcement removes the final major regulatory obstacle to the racecourse reopening under its new management.

Racing has not taken place at Chelmsford since March, after the previous licensed operator, Great Leighs Estates Limited, entered administration.

The reopening will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the racecourse, with six fixtures scheduled before the end of 2026 and live television coverage returning to Sky Sports Racing.

British Horseracing Authority Grants Official Licence

The BHA's decision follows a detailed licensing process, including an inspection of the all-weather track and supervised racecourse gallops.

Representatives from the Professional Jockeys Association and National Trainers Federation attended the tests alongside BHA inspectors.

Among those involved were jockeys PJ McDonald, Charlie Bishop and Kieran O'Neill, while Rob Sage represented the trainers' organisation.

Following the successful completion of the process, ARC confirmed that racing can resume on Monday 2 November.

Entries for the opening meeting are scheduled to close at midday on Tuesday 27 October.

Paul Ellison, Chelmsford City Racecourse's Executive Director, thanked those involved in preparing the venue for its return.

He said the reopening had required a major effort across ARC, the racecourse team and racing's regulatory and representative organisations.

The venue is now preparing to welcome horses, trainers, owners and racegoers back for the first time in several months.

Six Chelmsford Race Meetings Confirmed Before Christmas

The racecourse has published six scheduled fixtures for the remainder of 2026.

The December fixtures are being promoted as Christmas racedays, offering visitors an opportunity to combine live racing with festive hospitality.

Further fixtures are expected in 2027, although the full programme has not yet been finalised.

Tickets and hospitality information can be found on the racecourse's official website.

Why Did Chelmsford City Racecourse Stop Racing?

Chelmsford's racing programme was suspended earlier this year after Great Leighs Estates Limited, the venue's former licensed operator, entered administration.

The financial difficulties and subsequent licensing uncertainty resulted in race meetings being cancelled, including the racecourse's planned Easter Festival.

An earlier attempt to secure a new racing licence through Golden Mile Racing Limited was unsuccessful.

In October, ARC reached an agreement with the racecourse's freeholders, Chelmsford City Racecourse Limited, to take on a multi-year lease.

The agreement gives ARC responsibility for racing operations and the venue's wider events business.

The BHA licence granted on 23 October now allows that arrangement to move forward with racing.

Sky Sports Racing Returns to Chelmsford

The reopening also brings a change to Chelmsford's television coverage.

Live racing from the venue will return to Sky Sports Racing, with coverage also distributed through The Racing Partnership.

Sky Sports Racing previously broadcast from Chelmsford before the venue moved to Racing TV in 2018.

The return to national television coverage is an important part of the new operating arrangements, bringing the racecourse back into the regular racing programme watched by fans across the country.

Chelmsford's all-weather track will also participate in ARC's £1 million All-Weather Bonus scheme, with qualifying races contributing towards the competition.

What Happens to Previous Tickets and Bookings?

The racecourse's closure left some customers waiting for refunds relating to cancelled fixtures and events.

ARC has clarified that it is operating a new business under a lease and has not taken over the liabilities of the previous operator.

Customers with outstanding bookings or refund requests made before ARC took over should contact the previous operator, Sport & Leisure Property.

The racecourse has also confirmed that existing 2026 annual members will be allowed free entry to the remaining Chelmsford fixtures this year.

Members of other ARC racecourses will also be eligible for complimentary general admission, subject to the group's usual exclusions.

Anyone with an outstanding booking is advised to consult the racecourse's official customer information before making further arrangements.

What Does the Reopening Mean for Chelmsford?

The return of horse racing restores an important sporting and events venue to the Chelmsford area.

Located near Great Leighs, Chelmsford City Racecourse is known for its floodlit all-weather racing and has attracted visitors from across Essex and beyond.

Its return will be welcomed by racegoers, trainers and others involved in the local racing industry.

The new management arrangements also provide a route towards restoring the venue's wider programme of hospitality, entertainment and non-racing events.

With the licence now granted and the first fixture just days away, Chelmsford City Racecourse is preparing to welcome spectators back on Monday 2 November 2026.
