Chelmsford Food Waste Collections Delayed Across Dozens of Roads as Council Announces Saturday Catch-Up

Residents across parts of Chelmsford are being advised of changes to their food waste collections after operational problems forced the council to postpone some collections scheduled for Friday 23 October 2026.

Chelmsford City Council has confirmed that affected collections have been rescheduled for Saturday 24 October, with crews due to return to the impacted areas.

The disruption has reportedly affected 67 roads across the Chelmsford area, although residents should consult the council's official list to confirm whether their street is included.

Why Have Food Waste Collections Been Delayed?

According to Chelmsford City Council, the changes have been necessary because of operational issues affecting Friday's scheduled food waste collections.

The council has apologised for the inconvenience and confirmed that the affected collections will instead take place on Saturday.

The disruption relates specifically to food waste collections. The council's notice does not announce a general postponement of all household waste and recycling services.

Which Chelmsford Roads Are Affected?

Residents who were expecting a food waste collection on Friday 23 October are encouraged to check whether their road appears on the council's list of affected streets.

You can check the latest information and view the affected roads on the Chelmsford City Council bin collection website.

The council's online service also allows households to look up their usual collection calendar by address.

What Should Residents Do?

Households included in the delayed collection arrangements should make their food waste bins available for the rescheduled Saturday collection.

Chelmsford City Council's usual guidance is that waste containers should be presented at the edge of the property by 7am on collection day.

Residents whose collections are not completed as expected can use the council's online missed collection reporting service.

For further assistance, the council's bins and recycling team can be contacted on 01245 615800.

Changes to Bin Collection Routes Also Planned

The temporary disruption comes as Chelmsford City Council continues work on a wider review of its waste and recycling collection routes.

The council announced in September that it was reviewing collection rounds to account for population growth and the increasing number of households served.

Approximately 7,500 properties could see changes to their collection day or week when the revised arrangements are introduced in early 2027.

The council has also paused the distribution of printed collection calendars while the route review is underway, encouraging residents to use its online collection checker.

There is no indication that Friday's operational disruption was caused by the wider route review.

Chelmsford City Hub will update this article if the council announces further changes to the catch-up collection arrangements.
