Chelmsford Poppy Festival to Launch This Week as City Prepares for Remembrance

Chelmsford is preparing for a special weekend of remembrance as the Chelmsford Poppy Festival launches on Friday 23 October, followed by the local launch of the Royal British Legion's annual Poppy Appeal on Saturday 24 October 2026.

Both occasions are scheduled to take place at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, marking the beginning of a city-wide tribute to those who have served and sacrificed in the Armed Forces.

The festival will see thousands of handmade knitted and crocheted poppies displayed across Chelmsford city centre, bringing together the efforts of local residents, craft groups, volunteers and community organisations.

Chelmsford Poppy Festival launches on Friday

Chelmsford City Council's official mayoral diary confirms that the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Lynne Foster, is scheduled to attend the Chelmsford Poppy Festival launch evening at High Chelmer Shopping Centre on Friday 23 October.

The following day, Saturday 24 October, the Mayor is also scheduled to attend the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal launch at the same venue.

The council has not published public attendance arrangements or starting times for the two launch occasions, so residents should check for further information before making a special journey.

Thousands of handmade poppies to decorate Chelmsford

The Chelmsford Poppy Festival is a major community project designed to bring the city together through a shared act of remembrance.

Residents and local craft groups have been encouraged to knit and crochet poppies for displays in prominent locations.

The planned installations include:

  • High Chelmer Shopping Centre
  • Shire Hall
  • Chelmsford Market
  • Other participating city-centre businesses
  • Selected lampposts and railings around Chelmsford

Special movable installations are also planned to travel around the city before being brought together at the Civic Centre War Memorial for Remembrance Day.

The displays are intended to provide a visible tribute to the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and those affected by conflict.

Supporting the Royal British Legion

The festival will also support the Royal British Legion, which provides assistance to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Some of the poppy installations will feature QR codes and collection points, allowing members of the public to make donations.

The Royal British Legion's national Poppy Appeal officially launches on Thursday 22 October 2026, with poppies available at participating supermarkets, high street shops, railway stations and other locations.

The charity says money raised through the appeal helps fund practical, financial and emotional support for the Armed Forces community.

A community effort across Chelmsford

The Poppy Festival has been supported by Chelmsford City Council and Chelmsford Council for Voluntary Service (Chelmsford CVS), with residents invited to contribute handmade poppies.

The project has brought together individuals and community groups through a shared creative activity.

Councillor Stephen Robinson, Leader of Chelmsford City Council, previously welcomed the initiative, describing the time and care involved in creating each poppy as an expression of respect and remembrance.

Chelmsford CVS coordinated the collection of handmade poppies ahead of the festival, with the original submission deadline falling on 28 September.

Residents who would like further information about the project can visit the Chelmsford CVS Poppy Festival webpage.

When is Remembrance Sunday 2026?

Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November 2026, when communities across the country will gather to remember those who lost their lives in military service and conflict.

Armistice Day follows on Wednesday 11 November, marking the anniversary of the end of fighting in the First World War in 1918.

The Chelmsford Poppy Festival displays are intended to form part of the city's commemorations in the lead-up to these dates.
