Chelmsford launches £14,000 fund to help residents facing transport barriers

Chelmsford City Council has launched a new £14,000 grant fund aimed at helping residents who struggle to access essential services and opportunities because of transport difficulties.

The council's new Transport Poverty Grant Scheme will provide grants of up to £1,500 to voluntary and community organisations working on projects designed to reduce transport-related barriers across the Chelmsford area.

Applications are now being invited from eligible organisations.

What is transport poverty?

Transport poverty can affect people who do not have adequate access to affordable or suitable transport, making it more difficult to reach essential services and participate fully in everyday life.

Chelmsford City Council says transport difficulties can prevent people from accessing areas including healthcare, employment, food, education, social networks and wellbeing services.

The new grant scheme is intended to support community-led projects which can help address these barriers.

Grants of up to £1,500 available

A total of £14,000 has been made available through the scheme.

Eligible voluntary and community organisations can apply for grants of up to £1,500 per project.

The council says funding could be used for initiatives including community transport schemes, volunteer driver programmes and projects helping residents access services that would otherwise be difficult for them to reach.

Projects should demonstrate how they will help people experiencing transport poverty within the Chelmsford City Council area.

Who can apply?

The scheme is aimed at voluntary and community organisations delivering projects which benefit Chelmsford residents.

Applicants will need to demonstrate a clear need for their proposed project and explain how it will improve access to essential services, opportunities or social connections.

The council says applications will be assessed against the objectives of the scheme, with organisations encouraged to clearly explain the difference their project would make.

Tackling isolation and inequality

Lack of suitable transport can have consequences beyond simply making journeys more difficult.

People without reliable transport can face greater difficulty attending medical appointments, travelling to work or training, accessing shops and services or maintaining social connections.

This can be particularly challenging for people living in areas where public transport options are limited, as well as residents who cannot drive or do not have access to a car.

The Transport Poverty Grant Scheme is designed to enable local organisations to develop practical solutions based on the needs of the communities they support.

How to apply for a Chelmsford Transport Poverty Grant

Community and voluntary organisations interested in applying should check the eligibility criteria and application information published by Chelmsford City Council.

Individual grants of up to £1,500 are available from the overall £14,000 funding pot.

Organisations considering an application should ensure their proposed project clearly addresses transport poverty and benefits people within the Chelmsford area.
