Come From Away opens at Chelmsford Theatre tonight
The hit musical Come From Away opens at Chelmsford Theatre tonight, beginning a four-day run in the city.
Chelmsford Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (CAODS) is bringing the acclaimed musical to the Fairfield Road theatre from Wednesday, September 23 to Saturday, September 26.
Opening night begins at 7.30pm tonight, with tickets still available.
The remarkable story behind Come From Away
Come From Away tells the true story of what happened in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
When United States airspace was closed, 38 international aircraft carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to Gander.
The sudden arrival of thousands of stranded travellers presented the local community with an extraordinary challenge.
Residents opened their homes and provided food, shelter and support to people from around the world as passengers waited to discover when they would be able to continue their journeys.
The events inspired Come From Away, which combines music, humour and emotional storytelling to tell the stories of both the passengers and the people who welcomed them.
Chelmsford production by CAODS
The Chelmsford production is being staged by CAODS, one of the city's longest-established amateur theatre groups.
The society dates back to 1920 and regularly stages major musical productions at Chelmsford Theatre, supported by professional directors and musicians.
Come From Away is the group's latest production and runs for approximately 100 minutes.

There are five performances during the Chelmsford run:
- Wednesday, September 23 – 7.30pm
- Thursday, September 24 – 7.30pm
- Friday, September 25 – 7.30pm
- Saturday, September 26 – 3pm
- Saturday, September 26 – 7.30pm
Thursday evening's performance is also listed as a captioned performance.
Tickets cost between £23.50 and £25.50 and were still showing as available for tonight's opening performance at the time of publication.
