Lidl Eyes New Supermarket in Chelmsford as Part of Major Essex Expansion

Discount supermarket giant Lidl has confirmed it is actively seeking sites in Chelmsford for a new store, as part of its ambitious nationwide growth programme.

According to the latest update on Lidl’s property website and reported locally this week, Chelmsford is one of just 11 locations in Essex where the retailer is targeting new stores. The specific areas named in Lidl’s site requirements are Chelmsford – Broomfield and Chelmsford – Springfield.

Lidl is looking for high-quality sites of at least 1.5 acres with prominent visibility, ample free parking (100+ spaces), and a strong local catchment population. The proposed new stores would follow Lidl’s modern format, offering fresh produce, bakery, and its popular range of own-brand and premium products.

A spokesperson for Lidl GB has previously stated that the company has “ambitious plans to open hundreds of new stores across Great Britain” and continues to invite landowners and developers to bring forward suitable sites.

Full list of 11 Essex locations currently targeted by Lidl (April 2026):

  • Basildon
  • Billericay
  • Braintree East
  • Great Notley
  • Chelmsford
  • Colchester (North & West)
  • South Woodham Ferrers
  • Leigh-on-Sea
  • Rochford
  • Wickford

This latest announcement comes shortly after Lidl opened 19 new stores across the UK in the first months of 2026, including one in Basildon Laindon, Essex. No firm timeline, planning application, or opening date has yet been confirmed for the Chelmsford sites.

Local residents have mixed views on the news — some welcome the extra competition and convenience, while others worry about traffic and the impact on existing supermarkets in the city.

Lidl currently operates stores in Chelmsford, but the addition of a new branch (particularly in the Broomfield or Springfield areas) would significantly boost the retailer’s presence in the city.
