New Secure Cycle Hangars Installed in Beaulieu as Chelmsford Improves Cycling Routes
Two new secure bicycle storage facilities have opened in Beaulieu, giving residents and visitors free places to park their bikes as part of wider improvements to walking and cycling routes across the area.
Chelmsford City Council has announced the installation of two new cycle hangars in Beaulieu, designed to make cycling a more convenient option for everyday journeys.
The new FalcoPod facilities have been installed at Beaulieu Park Sports Ground and Beaulieu Square, providing secure bicycle parking close to popular community facilities.
Both hangars are free to use, with spaces available to book through the ParkMyBike app.
Where are the new Beaulieu cycle hangars?
The first hangar is located beside the pavilion and car park at Beaulieu Park Sports Ground, which provides facilities for football, cricket and other recreational activities.
The second has been installed at Beaulieu Square, on the paved area beside Sainsbury's Local.
The Beaulieu Square location is particularly convenient for people visiting nearby shops, Beaulieu Community Centre and the local doctor's surgery.
The hangars are designed to provide secure storage for bicycles while people use local facilities, reducing the need to travel by car for shorter journeys.
Free cycle parking for residents and visitors
Unlike some secure bicycle storage schemes, the new Beaulieu hangars are available without a parking charge.
Cyclists can reserve spaces using the ParkMyBike app, which manages bookings for the facilities.
The council hopes the additional storage will encourage more people to cycle for local journeys, particularly when visiting shops, sports facilities and other neighbourhood amenities.
More improvements to cycling routes
The new hangars form part of a wider package of infrastructure improvements supported by funding from Homes England.
Other projects include:
- Resurfacing part of Bridleway 18 between Beaulieu and Channels, including improvements to the route connecting with the Pegasus crossing on Essex Regiment Way.
- Creating a new shared footway and cycleway between Barn Green, Springfield and Beaulieu, alongside a toucan crossing on White Hart Lane.
- Progressing proposals to extend the Voi e-scooter operating area into Beaulieu and Channels, including the publication of a Traffic Regulation Order.
These projects are intended to improve connections between residential neighbourhoods and make walking and cycling more practical alternatives for shorter journeys.
Council hopes to encourage more cycling
Councillor Terry Sherlock, Chelmsford City Council's Cabinet Deputy for Economy and Sustainable Transport, welcomed the improvements.
He said the council wanted residents to have genuine choices about how they travel, supported by accessible walking, cycling and public transport facilities.
The councillor also highlighted existing cycle storage at Beaulieu Park railway station, saying the additional hangars would make travelling through the neighbourhood by bicycle even easier.
Part of Chelmsford's growing cycling network
Beaulieu forms part of the wider Chelmsford Garden Community development, where new walking and cycling connections are being created between residential areas and local services.
Existing routes connect Beaulieu Park railway station with Channels, Springfield, Chelmer Village and other nearby neighbourhoods.
The latest improvements add to that network, with paths also available around Great Park and Beaulieu Park Recreation Ground.
Residents wanting to explore local cycling routes can find maps and further information through the Chelmsford City Council website.
