Major police response in Chelmsford after report of man holding firearm
A major police response was launched in Chelmsford after officers received a report of a man who appeared to be holding a firearm.
Essex Police were called to Melbourne Avenue at around 2.45pm on Monday, 14 September, following concerns raised by a member of the public.
A significant police presence was deployed to the area while officers worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the report.
Police have since reassured residents that there is no wider risk to the public.
Chief Inspector Michelle Sparks said the initial information received by the force clearly required an immediate and significant response.
She explained that when police receive reports suggesting there may be a firearm in a public place, officers will respond quickly and robustly in order to protect the public and establish the facts.
Essex Police also thanked the member of the public who initially raised the alarm, as well as residents in the area for their patience and cooperation while officers dealt with the incident.
The police presence prompted concern among people living nearby as officers carried out enquiries.
However, following the response, police said they had been able to build a fuller picture of what had happened and confirmed there was no wider threat to the community.
At this stage, police have not said that a firearm was recovered or confirmed that the object initially reported was a genuine weapon.
Chelmsford City Hub will update this story if Essex Police releases further information about the incident.
