Pump Lane Improvements Completed in Springfield as New Crossing Opens

Road improvements in Springfield have been completed, bringing a new pedestrian and cycle crossing, upgraded pathways and measures designed to make everyday journeys safer for local residents.

Essex County Council has confirmed that work on Pump Lane in Chelmsford has finished on time and within budget.

The scheme includes a new signal-controlled toucan crossing, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road more safely.

Improved drainage has also been installed to help reduce the risk of flooding, alongside upgrades to shared walking and cycling paths.

Other changes include new cycle parking near local shops, dropped kerbs, tactile paving and parking restrictions designed to improve safety.

Better connections for Springfield residents

The improvements are intended to make it easier for people to travel between residential areas and nearby shops, the local pub and primary school.

They are also part of a wider ambition to improve walking and cycling connections between Chelmsford city centre, Springfield and Beaulieu Park.

Essex County Council says the project was shaped by feedback from residents, with many supporting the proposals during the consultation process.

Council welcomes completion

Councillor Mark Webster, Essex County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, thanked residents who contributed to the consultation.

He said the improvements should help make everyday journeys to local shops and the school safer and easier.

The council also hopes to deliver further sections of the wider walking and cycling route when additional funding becomes available.

What happens next?

Although the Pump Lane improvements are now complete, the wider route connecting Chelmsford city centre with Springfield and Beaulieu Park remains an ambition rather than a fully funded, completed project.

The council has indicated that further sections will depend on future funding.

For Springfield residents, however, the completed Pump Lane scheme provides an immediate improvement to local walking and cycling infrastructure.
