The Black Bull in Chelmsford to Close for Major Refurbishment

A popular Chelmsford community pub is set to shut its doors for a month-long makeover.

The Black Bull, located at 244 Rainsford Road, Chelmsford, CM1 2PN, will close on Sunday 31st May 2026 for a significant refurbishment. The works are expected to last around a month, with the pub hoping to reopen in late June 2026 (exact reopening date to be confirmed).

Management has described the closure as a chance “to rebuild, refresh, and reimagine” the venue. In a statement, they said:

“We will be closing our doors on the 31st of May 2026. But this isn’t the end… We’re taking a short pause — to rebuild, to refresh, and to reimagine everything we love about this place. A fresh new look, a new energy, but the same heart, soul and drive you have come to expect from The Black Bull.”

The family-run pub, just a mile from Chelmsford city centre and opposite Admirals Park, is well known for its welcoming atmosphere, live music, sports screenings, pool, darts, and a large beer garden with a children’s play area — making it especially popular with families during the summer.

Regulars are encouraged to make the most of the remaining weeks before closure, with the team promising plenty of food, drinks, and warm summer nights ahead.

Once reopened, the refreshed Black Bull aims to return even better while retaining the community spirit that locals love.
