Chelmsford Remembrance Sunday Road Closures: 21 Roads Affected as Bus Station Shuts

Drivers and bus passengers are being warned of widespread road closures in Chelmsford city centre on Sunday 8 November 2026, as the city prepares to hold its annual Remembrance Sunday service and parade.

Chelmsford City Council has confirmed that 21 roads will be affected, either fully or partially, between 10am and 12.30pm, with additional restrictions introduced this year to help keep those attending the commemorations safe.

Chelmsford Bus Station will also be temporarily closed, with alternative bus stops operating during the restrictions.

The closures will affect several of the city's main routes, including Duke Street, Broomfield Road, Rainsford Road, Victoria Road South and New London Road.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys, while passengers travelling by bus should check arrangements before setting off.

Chelmsford Bus Station to Close Temporarily

The road closures will also affect public transport services in the city centre.

Chelmsford City Council has confirmed that Chelmsford Bus Station will be closed during the restrictions, with alternative temporary bus stops provided.

Passengers who normally catch or change buses at the station should check with their bus operator before travelling.

Services may need to follow different routes or use alternative stopping locations while the parade and commemorations take place.

The council has not published a complete operator-by-operator timetable of affected services in its road closure announcement.

When Will the Roads Reopen?

The restrictions are scheduled to operate during the following period:

  • Date: Sunday 8 November 2026
  • Road closures begin: 10am
  • Scheduled end: 12.30pm
  • Reason: Chelmsford Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade

The published closure window is two and a half hours.

Drivers should be aware that individual roads may be affected differently during the event, depending on the procession and arrangements for those attending.

Where Is the Chelmsford Remembrance Sunday Service?

Chelmsford's annual Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade will take place at the Chelmsford War Memorial outside the Civic Centre on Duke Street.

The service is scheduled to begin at 10.55am on Sunday 8 November.

It will be conducted by The Very Reverend Dr Jessica Martin, Dean of Chelmsford.

The ceremony will include the traditional two-minute silence at 11am, commemorating those who lost their lives in military service and conflict.

The silence marks the time at which the Armistice ending the fighting on the Western Front in the First World War came into effect on 11 November 1918.

Members of the public wishing to attend should allow additional time to reach the memorial because of the road closures and expected numbers of people.

Extra Road Closures Introduced for 2026

Chelmsford City Council says additional road closures have been introduced this year because of the number of people expected to attend the Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

The restrictions cover a wider area of the city centre than the immediate surroundings of the Civic Centre and war memorial.

They include roads around the railway station, bus station and central shopping area, making the changes particularly relevant to residents, visitors and anyone travelling through Chelmsford on Sunday morning.

The council's official road closure map provides the most detailed information about the affected sections.

Chelmsford's Poppy Festival Marks Remembrance

This year's commemorations also coincide with Chelmsford's first Poppy Festival, featuring thousands of handmade poppies created by local volunteers and community groups.

Displays have been planned at prominent city-centre locations, including High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Chelmsford Cathedral, Shire Hall and the Civic Centre War Memorial.

The installations form part of the city's wider programme of remembrance activities leading up to Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day on Wednesday 11 November.
